How do I properly store acryclic paintings done on canvas
The majority of the acrylic paintings are 4ft x 4ft and the canvas was
stretched by the artist on to wood frames. Some of the wood frames are
warping. l need a storage method that can be used for long term (over a
year) storage and is practical when dealing with at least 20 paintings.l
also need a method that is not super expensive. In case it is important to
storage: the paintings range in age from approximately 10-60 years old, but
the vast majority are 10-30 years old. Thank you for your help!
you could either hang it in your room
or wrap it in bubble wrap and store it
in your garage or under the bed
how you store them will depend a lot on how you finished the
outer coating but the beat I know of is an acid free slip sheet between
each one stored on end vertically in a room that does not get lots of
moisture but does not have a huge temp fluctuation either they should be
checked periodically for any problems they can also be dismounted later
and re stretched is necessary which is a common practice. good luck with
the project
A year is not long.
If they are properly varnished you can place them upright & in a manner
where they are spaced with some spacer between them. Any dry closet will
do provided it stays about constant room-temperature.
Warped wood will need replacement as it is near impossible to correct & is also impractical. Invest a few $ (or equivalent local currency) to replace them before storing. It will not influence the value negatively but will save the painting from damage in storage & transport.
well at galleries they have vertical shelfs. you could try
that. they wont touch each other and thats what you probably want.
